The diameter at the top is about 60 feet and expands to as much as 130 feet across the bottom. The maximum depth of the Blue Hole is approximately 85 feet. The visibility during the weekends is hampered by the amount of divers and the silt they stir up. Mid week, it is Gin clear, and one can readily see the bottom when standing on the side of Blue Hole. So if someone claims 80 feet visibility, they are probably correct. The Blue Hole has a water flow of 3,000 gallons a minute. Some seasonal variation to this can occur. The water temperature is 62 degrees F year around. Again, some seasonal variation with 1-2 degrees . The altitude is 4,762 feet above sea level, making the bottom equivalent to nearly a 100 foot dive at sea level. With the altitude of nearly 5,000 feet all dives at the Blue Hole are altitude dives. All divers must use the altitude diving tables and follow special procedures to avoid decompression sickness. Also, please consider the drive back to Albuquerque. This very quickly takes you to an altitude of 7,250 feet. Santa Rosa has several restaurants, places to stay as well as a campgrounds and more information can be obtain from the Chamber of Commerce, phone (505) 472-3763. The whole area of Santa Rosa and the Blue Hole are very nice, with enjoyable and friendly people. Hence, we call it the Scuba Diving Capital of the Great Southwest.
