Open Water Weekend
(2 days - 5 hours each day) SANTA ROSA, NM - Blue Hole & Perch 120 miles east of Albuquerque (exits 273, 275 & 277 on I-40) Once you have completed all the requirements in the academic and pool development sessions, you will be ready for the Open Water Training Dives and become a certified PADI Open Water Diver! There are four required training dives, with an optional skin diving exercise. In each of these dives you will get a chance to practice the same skills you learned in the pool in a real diving environment with your instructor. In the summer time we meet in Santa Rosa, where we have both Blue Hole and Perch Lake available to us. In the winter Perch Lake is too cold. During these months some of our dive training is done in Balmorhea State Park in west Texas. Particularly the long weekends lend themselves to driving down there. After the required training dives, we offer an Adventure Dive at no additional charge. Here you set the pace, and simply enjoy the tranquility of scuba diving. |

Travel: Consider travel on Friday afternoon or evening to Santa Rosa. It´s about a 2-hour drive. This will allow you to be rested and fresh for your open water diving. Blue Hole and Perch Lake are at an altitude of 4,762 feet. Breakfast: Eat a good meal. Coffee and a donut just does not suffice. Meeting: We meet at Blue Hole at 9:00 AM on Saturday. All dive gear will be assembled and kept on a large tarp, out of sand and mud. (Keep in mind that dive boats are small and space is limited and you are responsible for the gear) Facilities: Blue Hole has restrooms and cold showers available. At Perch Lake there are no facilities worth mentioning. Diving: You will be doing three scuba dives on Saturday On Sunday you will do the forth scuba dive and one optional skin dive. During these dives you will review all your skills plus learn a few more - like Underwater Navigation. After each dive you must log your dive in your logbook. Lunch: There will be no time to leave the dive site during the day. Bring seasonal warm clothing, sun protection, folding chair and your favorite foods and non-alcoholic beverages. Dinner: Depending on the weather and class opinion, we may have a grill party at Blue Hole. Or meet at a local restaurant for dinner on Saturday at 6:00 PM Alcoholic beverages shall not be consumed less than 12 hours prior to diving. Therefore, all alcoholic beverage drinking is to be completed prior to 8:30 PM on both Friday and Saturday. After dinner you can watch all the lights from the night divers in Blue Hole. Going Home: After the last dive on Sunday we rinse off our equipment in the showers at Blue Hole and then we normally meet at Comet "2" Restaurant for a Dutch treat burger, last minute paperwork, certification procedures and some general discussions. Keep in mind that Clines Corners is at 7,250 feet altitude. We need two hours of off-gassing before the drive over this high altitude area. We try to get out of Santa Rosa by approximately 1:00 PM. Please take care in driving. You will be quite tired after a full weekend of diving. |
